Their combos are effective in different ways, so Hammer can smash groups better than Gabriel (the hero you unlock for completing Fable: The Journey), who uses quick and precise attacks. The level-select board size is much larger than you may expect.Įach hero has its own distinct feel. The simplicity of its light combat and limited exploration don't detract from Fable Heroes as an action game, surprisingly enough, because it has numerous supporting and complementary pillars. Mashing buttons to smack Hobbes, kicking chickens in mini-games, and collecting gold is about what you'd expect from a 3D, mostly side-scrolling spin-off. Timmins and his team built a game they would have wanted growing up and then modernized a classic genre to achieve it. The new Albion is a vibrant pop-up book with a playful tone, the game progression and leveling structure are built around a board game, and the familiar Fable characters (Garth, Jack of Blades, etc.) look like the toys kids in the Fable universe play with. Fable Heroes does a wonderful job of demonstrating the elasticity of the Fable III code base, and the capabilities of its creators.
